Pathology Subspecialty

Cytopathology

The cytopathology subspecialty division of Hospital Pathology Associates focuses on diagnosing diseases based on cellular abnormalities. Small biopsies can be taken from almost anywhere in the body, often consisting only of a few isolated cells. Our providers examine cells using diagnostic techniques such as microscopy, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular/cytogenetic technologies to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and provide therapeutic and prognostic guidance.

Our close working relationships with radiologic, endoscopic and endobronchial proceduralists across the region mean involvement in thousands of procedures annually, in person or in collaboration with a cadre of experienced pathologist assistants and cytotechnologists. In addition, we have telepathology services to provide rapid evaluation and diagnoses to remote sites, allowing us to cover a broad territory. We also oversee a large cytology laboratory with a high-volume pap test core service that is among the largest in the upper Midwest.

Our cytopathologists come from a diverse set of well-regarded training institutions and are fully engaged members of treatment teams and many multidisciplinary tumor treatment conferences. We are experienced partners with practitioners who utilize some of the most advanced diagnostic techniques available in medicine today, including electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and endoscopic ultrasound guided biopsies. In addition, our close collaboration with Allina molecular and cytogenetics laboratories provides efficient access to Next Generation Sequencing testing for therapeutic guidance.
