Pathology Subspecialty

Pulmonary (Lung)

The pulmonary pathology subspecialty division of Hospital Pathology Associates provides high-quality diagnostic examination of specimens from the lungs, mediastinum and pleura. Our professional practice supports clinical care of patients being evaluated for lung cancer, respiratory infections and interstitial lung disease. In this endeavor, our team works closely with thoracic surgeons, interventional radiologists, medical oncologists and pulmonologists/critical care specialists across the Allina Health system and beyond.

Our team of five dedicated pathologists provides a broad range and depth of diagnostic expertise while utilizing a wide array of diagnostic and ancillary tools in the Allina Health Laboratory. Our team renders diagnoses from microscopic minimally invasive needle aspirates to surgical resection specimens and applies state-of-the-art immunohistochemistry, molecular and next generation sequencing to provide accurate and clinically actionable information to support our patients’ care. Our patient care support extends beyond the laboratory as well. We actively participate in multi-disciplinary tumor and interstitial lung disease conferences. We support our radiologists, surgeons and pulmonologists with hands-on specimen management during image guided biopsies and bronchoscopy procedures including endobronchial ultrasound. We utilize the most up-to-date tumor classification systems from the World Health Organization and follow the College of American Pathologists tumor protocols for comprehensive reporting. Our team stays current with the medical literature by reviewing subspecialty journals, discussing manuscripts and participating in clinical research.
