Location: Abbott Northwestern, Mercy, and United Hospitals, and the Allina Central Laboratory
Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:30 am – 5:30 pm with occasional evening shift coverage

Hospital Pathology Associates (HPA) provides pathology services to various healthcare organizations in Minnesota and Wisconsin and is Minnesota’s largest private pathology practice. We have an ensemble of highly skilled, seasoned pathologists and professional staff with a broad range of expertise not often found elsewhere. 

Our group comprises a collaborative team of sub-specialty Pathologists, pathologists’ assistants, and Biopsy Technicians who consistently provide exclusive, high-quality pathology services to the Allina Health Care System. Position Overview

We are looking to expand our team by an additional full-time Pathologists’ Assistant to work primarily at our Abbott Northwestern Hospital with rotation to Mercy Hospital and United Hospital, performing macroscopic evaluations of surgical pathology specimens and postmortem examinations. The position is predominantly a day shift position working 8:30 am-5:30 pm with occasional evening shift coverage (1:00-9:30 pm; approximately 20 evenings per year). The position also may include periodic rotation to our off-site dermatology or gastrointestinal clinics.

The base salary range for this full time position is $90,000 to $140,000 annually, depending on experience and training.

Essential Functions Include

  • Perform gross examinations on a wide variety of cases ranging from small biopsies to large, complex surgical resections.
  • Triage specimens from surgery; prepare urgent, fresh tissue for frozen section diagnosis and intra-operative consultation. 
  • Execute specialized procedures, including gross photography along with X-ray imaging and image analysis.
  • Perform adult and fetal autopsies, including review of clinical history, section submission, and writing the gross description.
  • Develop and master the use of standardized templates and dictation protocols for handling gross specimens to maintain maximum efficiency.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university (preferably in the biological sciences).
  • Completion of a two-year NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Program.
  • Certified as a Pathologists’ Assistant by the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) or American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and/or eligible within 12 months of hire.
