Position: Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Hematopathology)
Position Type: Part-time
Location: Work is performed at various HPA partner locations; travel required
Schedule: Rotating schedule primarily during days, with some early morning shift rotations. No holidays or weekend shifts required.

Hospital Pathology Associates (HPA) provides pathology services to various healthcare organizations in Minnesota and Wisconsin and is the largest pathology private practice in Minnesota. Our experienced team of pathologists examines and assesses lab samples to help healthcare providers make a diagnosis and guide treatment. Lab samples, also known as biological specimens, are tissues or bodily fluids gathered during a medical appointment or lab visit. We care for patients like you behind the scenes in our laboratories, and you are an essential member of our patient healthcare team.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for procurement of bone marrow biopsies across the Allina Health system, Northfield, Welia Health, and Grand Itasca.
- Communicate within multiple lab and hospital settings and across hospital departments (scheduling, nursing, oncology, endoscopy, radiology) for the scheduling and ordering of bone marrow biopsies.
Qualifications
- Minnesota Licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. Certified by the AANPCB, the NCCPA, or an authorized certification program acceptable to the Minnesota Board of Nursing, and proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, holding a Master’s or higher degree in Nursing, is preferred.
- The graduate degree requirement may be waived if the applicant meets the following criteria:
- Nurse Practitioner certification prior to the Master’s degree requirement by the Credentialing Resource Center; and
- Currently practicing as a Nurse Practitioner in their area of specialization.
- The graduate degree requirement may be waived if the applicant meets the following criteria:
- If the applicant is a recent graduate from a Nurse Practitioner program, successful completion of the certification examination is required no later than six months following graduation.
- Experience with performing medical procedures is preferred but not required. If the Practitioner has no experience performing bone marrow biopsies, they will be trained until they demonstrate proficiency, as judged by the sponsoring physician(s). Applicant must submit a copy of the written agreement with their sponsoring physician(s) based on standards established by the Minnesota Board of Nursing defining the prescription of drugs and therapeutic devices.
- Applicant must submit a copy of your current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate as Applicable.
- Ability to work independently as well as in tandem with other procurers.
- Team communication skills across multiple sites are a critical daily task.
- You must be able to travel between multiple sites in a day.
Core Privileges
Initial and ongoing assessment of patients’ medical, physical, and psychosocial status, including:
- obtain a relevant health and medical history;
- perform a physical examination based on age and history;
- conduct preventive screening procedures based on age and history;
- identify medical and health risks and needs;
- update and record changes in health status;
- formulate the appropriate differential diagnosis based on the history, physical examination, and clinical findings;
- identify needs of the individual, family or community as a result of the evaluation of the collected data;
- develop a patient-specific treatment plan;
- identify appropriate pharmacologic agents;
- identify non-pharmacologic interventions;
- develop a patient education plan, and contribute to plan of care development;
- order, conduct, interpret diagnostic tests;
- provide relevant patient education;
- make appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies;
- determine the effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of patient care outcomes;
- reassess and modify the plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals;
- participate in quality assurance review on a periodic basis, including systematic review of records and treatment plans; and
- write appropriate orders to meet treatment goals in consultation with physician.
- be familiar with the latest triage protocols and order appropriate ancillary studies based on triage protocols, most often in collaboration with hematopathologists
- craft appropriate clinical histories to communicate to hematopathologists and for bone marrow reports
Prescriptive Authority
Includes ordering appropriate diagnostic tests; prescribing pharmacologic agents; and prescribing non-pharmacologic therapies.

The base salary range for this part-time position, working as a 0.6 FTE, is $57,000 to $72,000 annually, depending on experience and training.
