Introductory note: I did an internship and one year of residency in Internal Medicine before transferring into Pathology residency.  I then spent two years as a General Medical Officer in the Navy.  I was initially assigned to a small helicopter aircraft carrier as ship’s medical officer, and then assigned to medical dependents’ dispensery in the San Diego area.  During my subsequent Pathology residency at the Mayo clinic, I elected extra time in the microbiology department that was closely integrated with their infectious disease department.  The daily lab rounds with the infectious disease service were especially helpful in developing my interest in the laboratory applications for infectious diseases.  I have subsequently maintained a strong interest in infectious disease as it pertains both to the clinical laboratory and the area of surgical pathology and biopsy correlations.  I have been a long-standing member of the infectious disease committee at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, and maintain close contacts with the infectious disease consults whenever a clinical or laboratory issue arises in this area.  I am currently the
